If you’ve heard of it in passing only; it’s a syrup that’s generally given to children, in certain cases of poisoning, that violently encourages vomiting through stimulation of the central nervous system and stomach.
Ipecac’s sole intended purpose is singular use facilitation of vomiting on an individual who has been accidentally poisoned.
If you’ve got an eating disorder that involves any kind of purging, this could possibly seem like a fantastic place to use your initiative, and buy a bottle and puke away, with no effort or throat scratching or knuckle bruising.
STEP AWAY FROM THE IPECAC!
YOU ARE NOT FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM IT YET!!! KEEP GOING OR YOU MIGHT DIE!
The misuse of Ipecac syrup can cause significant and severe medical complications; death is only one of its nasty potential consequences.
Karen Carpenter – the recording artist who suffered from an eating disorder – died from the misuse of Ipecac syrup. The alkaloid emetine from the Ipecac syrup had caused severe damage to her heart, which eventually led to her going into cardiac arrest, and subsequently dying.
Complications of the misuse of Ipecac include, but are not limited to:
Cardiac Arrest
Cardiac Arrhythmias
Irreversible damage to the muscles of the heart
Seizures
Shock
Hemorrhaging
Blackouts
High blood pressure
Respiratory complications
Dehydration
Electrolyte abnormalities
Death
Repeated use can weaken the heart muscle – which, let’s face it, none of us need – and every year it is the cause of death in many eating disordered persons.
Apparently, according to scientific MEDICAL studies, ipecac only gets up about 9-38% of your stomach's contents, if you take it 20 minutes after ingestion. And even if you take it right away, it still only gets up about 40-50%.
It’s no good! NO GOOD!
